The museum was founded in 1876 on the initiative of the Hungarian Carpathian Society in Poprad. It is one of the oldest museum objects in Slovakia, located in a neo-Renaissance building dating back from 1886. The museum in a very friendly way shows the history of the Tatra region, and among the exhibits there are also numerous handicrafts and elements of bourgeois clothing. The building also holds permanent exhibitions, such as the Spiš Saturday's, which showcases exhibits related to guilds and craftsmanship.
